Royal python found slithering at a German youth camp

A royal python turned up in an unexpected place this week. The snake, about a metre long, was discovered at a YMCA youth camp in Michelstadt on Thursday evening. Officers from Erbach police station arrived to secure the reptile. They took it back to the station, where it spent the night under supervision. The species is native to West and Central Africa’s tropical regions and poses no venom risk, as it kills prey by constriction.

Typically, royal pythons feed on small birds and mammals. Authorities have since arranged for the snake to be moved to a suitable facility.

The incident caused a brief stir at the youth camp. With the python now safely contained, officials will ensure it receives proper care. The next step involves finding a permanent home for the reptile.
