Pepper spray attack at German shopping centre leaves 19 injured
Pepper Spray Attack at Dreieich Nordpark Shopping Center
A 53-year-old man sprayed pepper spray at the Dreieich Nordpark shopping center in Dreieich on Friday morning. According to initial findings, an argument first broke out between the man and other customers inside the center on Robert-Bosch-Straße. Shortly after 11 a.m., the 53-year-old allegedly pulled out pepper spray and discharged it multiple times indiscriminately into a crowd.
Pepper Spray Also Used Near Store Checkout
Police believe the man then entered a nearby store and sprayed pepper spray again in the checkout area. Emergency services set up a triage point in the parking lot for those affected. A total of 19 people received treatment for eye and respiratory irritation.
Five Injured Taken to Hospital
Firefighters cordoned off the affected area and ventilated the building using high-pressure fans. According to incident commander Markus Tillmann, 19 people were affected, with five requiring further hospital treatment. A full evacuation of the shopping center was not necessary, as only a small section was impacted, fire officials said. The response included seven ambulances, a paramedic vehicle, and the emergency medical services command unit.
Suspect Apprehended Shortly After Fleeing
The man fled the shopping center on foot but was taken into provisional custody a short time later. He was initially taken to a police station, where a blood sample was taken. Following police procedures, the 53-year-old was transferred to a specialized clinic.
Investigation Underway, Witnesses Sought
Police say the motive behind the attack remains largely unclear. The suspect is under investigation for suspected grievous bodily harm. Witnesses are asked to contact Neu-Isenburg police station at +49 6102 2902-0.
