Luhrmann Sees Positive Green Trend Reversal in Hesse's Elections - Hesse's Greens show signs of revival in Sunday's local elections

Hesse's Green Party has seen early signs of a recovery in Sunday's local elections. The results suggest a possible rebound after a weaker showing in the 2021 federal vote. Co-leader Anna Lührmann described the initial trends as 'fairly satisfying' for her party.

Voters in Hesse cast ballots for district councils, city and municipal parliaments, and mayoral races on Sunday. The elections also included local advisory boards and foreign residents' councils. The Greens had struggled in the 2021 federal election, winning just 12.6% of the vote in Hesse, but performed better in that year's local contests with 18.4%.

Lührmann linked the party's current momentum to recent successes in neighbouring states. In Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, the Greens have made gains in local and regional elections. For example, in Bavaria's 2020 municipal vote, the party secured over 11% in some areas, outperforming the SPD in certain towns. The Greens now hope Hesse's local elections will reflect a similar upward trend. While full results are still being tallied, early figures hint at a stronger performance than in 2021's federal race.

The Greens appear to be regaining ground in Hesse after a dip in federal support. Their local election performance could signal a shift in voter sentiment. Final results will confirm whether this trend holds across the state.
