Today, the nationwide action day 'Shift Change' is taking place. People with and without disabilities across Germany are switching workplaces and gaining a new perspective on each other's working world. The customs office has been participating in this project for several years. This year, 19 main customs offices across Germany are taking part in a workplace swap. The main customs office in Gießen is also participating and took over a shift at the Hofgut Friedelhausen in Lollar, an inclusive project where people with disabilities live and work. It offers a variety of job opportunities in the 'green sector', such as working with animals and plants and in food processing. The customs officers eagerly helped out during their 'shift'. Whether preparing lunch, sweeping the courtyard, cutting basil, assisting a vet with a cow, or crafting for the on-site shop, their skills were put to good use. 'We were very impressed by the enthusiasm, dedication, and attention to detail with which so many different areas are worked and lived in here - from agriculture to the dairy, the seasonal and herb workshop, to the bakery and the shop,' explains Stephanie Auerswald, press spokesperson for the main customs office in Gießen. 'It feels like one big family that we were immediately welcomed into. The shift change has impressively strengthened our mutual understanding and helped to break down prejudices.' On October 1, 2025, the employees of Hofgut Friedelhausen will visit the main customs office in Gießen to learn more about the customs' work and take over a 'shift'.
