Hanau police crack down after knife attack leaves man critically injured
Police in Hanau carried out a large-scale operation on Friday to enforce the city's weapon-free zone. The crackdown followed a recent knife attack that left a 25-year-old man critically injured at Freiheitsplatz. Officers aimed to boost public safety and prevent further incidents by maintaining a strong visible presence.
The operation ran from 3:00 PM into the late evening, with teams from Hanau Police Station, municipal police, and riot units taking part. They checked 261 people in the designated area, recording personal details for potential administrative proceedings.
During the checks, officers confiscated three knives, a knuckle duster, three animal-repellent pistols, and three cans of pepper spray. They also inspected 15 vehicles and 27 individuals, uncovering eight breaches of access bans. Administrative reports were filed for these violations.
Enforcement later shifted to Hanau-Wilhelmsbad, where police focused on traffic rules, noise control, and access restrictions. Andreas Thiem, head of Hanau Police Station, confirmed that consistent action was being taken to deter illegal activity and uphold safety.
The operation did not uncover any administrative violations related to weapon-free zones since August 1, 2025. However, authorities continue to review the collected data for possible legal follow-ups. The measures were designed to reassure residents and reduce the risk of further violent incidents.
