German Toy Recall Sparks Asbestos Fears Amid Retailer's Financial Crisis
German toy retailer Rofu Kinderland has recalled certain plush figures after tests suggested their stuffing may contain traces of asbestos. The warning comes from a company statement issued by its headquarters in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as a notice published on the consumer safety portal Lebensmittelwarnung.de.
According to the announcement, the following products are affected:
In a customer advisory, Rofu stated: "We cannot rule out that the filling may contain traces of asbestos. If the product is damaged and stuffing escapes, there is a potential health risk." The affected items have already been removed from sale. Consumers are urged to stop using the toys immediately and return them to any Rofu Kinderland store for a full refund.
The recall comes as Rofu Kinderland struggles with financial difficulties. The retailer filed for insolvency in January following weak holiday sales, compounded by prolonged consumer caution amid rising living costs and fierce competition from online shopping.
