A routine traffic stop turned bizarre when police uncovered spoiled barbecue meat—and a driver with nearly three times the legal alcohol limit. What was he planning?

(lei) On Sunday, police officers in the Hessian-Bavarian border region pulled over not just a vehicle, but also its driver and parts of its cargo during a routine check. The recipient of the delivery was likely not pleased.

The reason for this was a civil patrol's keen eye, which spotted a white van on the B43a highway near the Hanau-Hauptbahnhof exit, heading towards Fulda and repeatedly veering off to the right. Upon closer inspection, the officers noticed that the driver was using a mobile phone while driving. After the driver merged onto the A45 towards Aschaffenburg, the officers again observed erratic driving and the driver using a mobile phone. The officers then signalled the driver to pull over at the Alzenau-Nord exit and onto a nearby commuter parking lot.

During the subsequent check of the 24-year-old driver from Rhineland-Palatinate, the officers detected the smell of alcohol and a generally impaired impression. A breathalyzer test revealed a reading of 1.42 per mille. The driver was then taken to the station for a blood test.

Before that, the officers discovered an unusual cargo in the transporter's cargo area: apart from several logs of firewood, they noticed a red plastic box containing about 20 kilograms of partly pre-cooked and partly raw barbecue meat. The box was not secured and some of the meat was already thawing, emitting a strong smell. The driver stated that he had started near Koblenz to deliver the meat to a friend who planned to sell it at a festival in Bavaria. Since the vehicle did not have a cooling device and the meat was not transported properly, it was seized and disposed of appropriately.

It is not known whether the recipient of the meat managed to find a replacement or had to cancel the sale at the festival. However, the 24-year-old now faces a criminal investigation for suspected drunk driving and possible violations of food safety regulations may be investigated.
