Driver faces charges after illegally reopening closed A4 motorway section

A section of the A4 motorway was shut for 13 hours after a lorry tyre blew out near Kirchheim. The incident caused major delays and led to an unusual confrontation when a driver illegally reopened the closed road. Authorities have now filed charges against the man responsible.

The disruption began when a lorry suffered a tyre blowout between Bad Hersfeld and Kirchheim. The vehicle crossed the central reservation, forcing a full closure of the northbound carriageway. Recovery teams worked through the day, clearing debris and repairing damaged barriers.

As crews carried out repairs, a 65-year-old man from Bendorf removed road closure signs at the Kirchheim interchange. He then directed other drivers onto the blocked section using hand signals. The unauthorised reopening was only discovered when motorists reached the accident site and were stopped by maintenance staff. Police identified the man at the scene and confirmed a criminal complaint had been filed. He now faces charges for dangerous interference with road traffic.

The A4 remained closed until Wednesday evening while final repairs and cleanup were completed. Police have reminded drivers to follow only official instructions during road closures. The incident highlights the risks of ignoring safety measures on major routes.
