Do228 NXT demonstrator completes historic first flight after 45 years

A modernised version of the classic Do228 aircraft has taken flight for the first time. The Do228 NXT demonstrator completed its maiden voyage on May 2, 2026—nearly 45 years after the original model’s debut. This achievement highlights years of work by General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS). The successful test flight comes after GA-ATS restarted series production of the Do228 NXT. Engineers and designers have spent years upgrading the multi-role platform for modern demands. The May 2 flight confirms their progress and opens a new phase for the aircraft.

Further test flights are planned to gather performance data under different conditions. These trials will help refine the aircraft before its official launch. The public will get its first look in summer 2026, with appearances scheduled at ILA Berlin and the Farnborough International Airshow. The Do228 NXT builds on the legacy of the original Do228, which first flew in 1981. This updated version aims to extend the platform’s versatility for future operators.

The maiden flight proves the Do228 NXT’s readiness for the next stage of testing. Once fully certified, the aircraft will enter service as a modernised successor to a proven design. Industry events later in 2026 will showcase its capabilities to potential customers.
