University of Bremen secures €20.5 million for historic campus upgrades by 2030
The University of Bremen will receive a €20.5 million upgrade after the Bremen Senate approved the investment on 5 May 2026. The funds will target two historic buildings, improving safety, sustainability, and study conditions for students and staff. The work forms part of a broader plan to modernise the campus over the next four years. The investment will focus on 'Geisteswissenschaften 1' (GW1) and 'Naturwissenschaften 1' (NW1), both original buildings from the university’s founding. A total of €18.8 million will come from federal funds under the Fast-Track Construction Initiative, with the remaining amount covered by the state. The upgrades will remove hazardous materials, enhance fire safety systems, and modernise technical infrastructure.
The renovations also include relocating the university’s outpatient clinic to a more central campus site. New therapy rooms, psychological labs, and waiting areas for adults and children will be added. Additionally, the buildings will be adapted to current academic needs, with modern study spaces for students. Work will be carried out in stages over the coming years. The aim is to create safer, more sustainable, and climate-friendly facilities while ensuring minimal disruption to daily university operations.
The €20.5 million project will transform key university buildings, improving both learning and working conditions. Once completed, the upgrades will provide modernised infrastructure, better safety standards, and enhanced support for research and teaching at the University of Bremen.
