Arsonists torch old tyres in Kassel, leaving melted pavement behind

A pile of old car tyres was deliberately set alight in Kassel’s Nordstadt district on Monday evening. The fire, reported by local residents, caused damage to nearby paving stones and prompted a police investigation into the incident. The blaze broke out at around 6:20 p.m. in a backyard on Struthbachweg. Residents quickly raised the alarm, but by the time firefighters and officers arrived, witnesses had already put out the flames. Investigators later discovered a firework among the charred tyres, suggesting it had been used to start the fire.

The intense heat from the burning rubber melted the surface of the paving stones beneath. Authorities estimate repairs will cost several hundred euros. Kassel Police’s Regional Investigation Group, specifically Unit EG 4, is now leading the inquiry. Officers are appealing for witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity near the scene on Monday evening. Anyone with information is urged to contact the North Hesse Police Headquarters on +49 561 9100.

The fire left behind damaged paving and a pile of melted tyres. Police continue to search for those responsible, while repairs to the affected area are expected to begin soon. The investigation remains ongoing.
