Roof box disaster scatters luggage across German motorway, halting holiday plans
A driver’s holiday plans were disrupted on Tuesday evening after his roof box came loose on the A45 near Langenselbold. The incident, which happened around 7:30 PM, scattered luggage across two lanes of the motorway and forced temporary lane closures in both directions. The 59-year-old man from the Lahn-Dill district was travelling when the entire contents of his roof box detached and spread over roughly 100 metres of the highway. The top section of the box also flew into the opposite lane towards Giessen.
As recovery teams worked to clear the debris, two lanes heading towards Aschaffenburg and one lane towards Giessen were temporarily shut. The driver, unable to refit all the lost items into his vehicle, had to abandon his planned trip to Croatia. Authorities confirmed no injuries resulted from the incident. However, the driver now faces an administrative offence procedure and will likely need to replace the damaged roof box.
The motorway lanes were reopened once the debris was removed. The driver’s vacation remains on hold, and he must now address the legal and practical consequences of the accident. No further disruptions to traffic were reported after the clean-up.
