Dietrich Oedekoven, Wiesbaden's respected elder statesman and longtime city treasurer, has died at the age of 97. He passed away on March 12, 2026, just days before his 98th birthday. The city has responded with public tributes, while a private funeral will be held for his family.
Born in Aachen in 1928, Oedekoven studied law, political science, economics, and business administration. His early interest in public service led him to roles in North Rhine-Westphalia's Ministry of Justice and the German Association of Cities. Before arriving in Wiesbaden, he also served as mayor and finance chief in Ludwigshafen, gaining broad administrative experience.
His defining role began in 1968 when he became Wiesbaden's city treasurer. Over the next 22 years, he worked under four mayors: Rudi Schmitt, Georg-Berndt Oschatz, Professor Hans-Joachim Jentsch, and Achim Exner. Known for his precision, sharp eye for detail, and deep understanding of both numbers and people, he guided the city through periods of transformation and growth.
