Synthetic fertilizer prices set to rise in 2025 as organic gardening booms
Hobby gardeners may soon face higher prices for synthetic fertilizers next year. The cost of a litre of mineral liquid fertilizer, currently around €12, could climb to €13 or €14. This expected rise comes as the organic sector continues to grow at two to three times the rate of the conventional market. The war in Iran has disrupted supply chains, pushing up costs for synthetic fertilizers. Manufacturers have already secured raw materials for this season, but next year’s prices are likely to increase. Meanwhile, soaring diesel costs are making it harder to transport products to stores on time and without extra charges.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, more gardeners have switched to organic alternatives. Two-thirds of Compo’s soil and plant care products are now organic, reflecting this shift. For now, most synthetic fertilizers remain available, but the trend toward organic options is accelerating.
The organic fertiliser market is expanding rapidly, outpacing conventional products. Gardeners may see higher prices for synthetic options in 2025 due to geopolitical tensions and rising fuel costs. The shift to organic alternatives, however, shows no signs of slowing down.
