Police suspect arson after straw bale fire near Baunatal-Altenbauna

On Thursday evening around 19:30, firefighters and police were called to a fire involving straw bales on a field between Baunatal-Altenbauna and Hertingshausen, near the Leiselsee. A man walking his dog nearby noticed the smoldering bales and immediately called the emergency number. Thanks to his prompt report and the assistance of a local farmer who used a tractor to remove two burning bales from a roughly 30-meter-long row, the fire was quickly extinguished and the spread to other bales was prevented. Initial investigations by officers from the Süd-West police station suggest that the fire was not caused by spontaneous combustion, indicating that the straw bales were deliberately set alight. The subsequent search for suspects was unsuccessful. Shortly before the fire was discovered, several children, approximately 11 years old and on e-scooters, were seen near the scene. Their involvement in the incident is currently unknown.
