Marburg's 2026 Cultural Award Spotlights Japan, Korea, and Middle East Ties
The Christian Meineke Award for Cultural Interaction will honour three Marburg initiatives in 2026. This year's focus is on projects fostering ties with Japan, South Korea, and the Middle East—particularly Israel and Palestine. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 1, as part of the city's Ramadan tent event. Applications for the €1,500 prize are open until Sunday, February 15. Initiatives must have been active for at least one year and show a commitment to sustainability, with plans to continue for another two years. A specialist jury will review all entries and select the winner(s).
Past recipients include organisations like Lebenswerter Stadtteil Richtsberg e.V., the Marburg-Sfax Friendship Association, and the German-Swedish Friendship Association. Other winners have ranged from disaster relief groups, such as Earthquake Relief Antiochia Hatay e.V., to integration networks like the Volunteer Network for Refugees and Integration (EFI). The award recognises efforts that strengthen social harmony and peaceful coexistence in Marburg. Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies and Councilor Kirsten Dinnebier will present the prize at the ceremony. All applicants are advised to reserve March 1 in their calendars.
The winning initiatives will receive €1,500 and public recognition at the Ramadan tent event. The award highlights Marburg's ongoing commitment to international and intercultural exchange. Successful projects will join a list of past recipients known for their long-term impact on local and global partnerships.
