Hessian police expand force with 595 new recruits in 2024

This year, a total of 595 new recruits of the Hessian police began their studies at the Hessian University of Public Management and Security (HoMS). After welcoming 264 new colleagues in February of this year, another 331 new police cadets followed in the second recruitment round in September.

Constantly high application numbers

Interior Minister Roman Poseck explains: "Being a police officer remains an exciting profession, as evidenced by the consistently high application numbers. Over 4,600 women and men have applied to the Hessian police this year. A total of 595 new recruits have begun their studies at the Hessian University of Public Management and Security (HoMS), thus exceeding the minimum recruitment target of 580.

The great interest of so many young and motivated people is a strong signal for our rule of law and our police. It also shows that the appeal of the police profession has not been lost and that the state of Hesse remains an attractive employer, which is not a given in view of demographic change. The new recruits will strengthen the Hessian police in its responsibility for security in society.

The police have invested heavily in personnel in recent years and, through the recruitment offensive of security packages I - III, have achieved a historic increase of around 2,300 police officers in total. Currently, over 16,000 police officers are deployed for the security of the people throughout the country, benefiting all police stations and thus the citizens. This is an increase of around 18 percent compared to 2014. We also want to continue to strengthen the police in the future.

Police service is varied and exciting. We rely on diversity and address different people. We ensure a high-quality training of the future police officers.

Given the great challenges that this profession brings with it, I am all the more pleased that so many young people are willing to take on responsibility for the security of our federal state. I am aware that a lot is demanded of police officers today. The state government stands fully behind the police and we will contribute to further improving the working conditions in the police. This includes better pay, modern equipment, and above all respect for the daily work.

The Hessian police are a guarantee for internal security. The police make a significant contribution to Hesse being one of the safest federal states in Germany.

Studies optimally prepare recruits for practice

The training of future police officers takes place within a bachelor's degree program at the HoMS. The study offers many practical components and thus establishes the connection between theory and police work early on. Hesse offers two specific study programs for protective and criminal police, and since February 2021 also the specialisation in cybercrime. In the three-year study program, the new police cadets are professionally prepared for the future challenges to subsequently be active in the most diverse fields of the Hessian police. Furthermore, the police also offers top athletes the opportunity to combine high-performance sports and career.

The next recruitment date for applicants is February 2026.
