Hesse's new battery recycling plant sets a benchmark for sustainable industry

Hessian Minister-President Boris Rhein has showcased the state as a modern industrial hub, emphasizing efficient resource use as a key competitive advantage. Speaking at the opening of a new battery recycling plant operated by Saubermacher Recycling GmbH and Meinhardt Municipal Services GmbH in Ginsheim-Gustavsburg on Tuesday, the premier stated: "A modern industrial location must do more than just produce—it must retain value creation within the country. Especially in these geopolitically turbulent times, we need greater self-sufficiency and resilience through smart innovation and investment."

The facility employs cutting-edge sorting technologies and artificial intelligence to process used batteries and small electronic devices, recovering valuable raw materials for reuse in industrial production. The state of Hesse supported the project with €700,000 in funding.

Rhein described the plant as a model of responsibility and progress, highlighting its advanced methods: "This facility combines innovative sorting technology with the highest safety and environmental standards. It proves that sustainability and economic strength are not contradictory but together form a competitive edge. Companies like Saubermacher and Meinhardt are making a vital contribution to a successful circular economy, greater industrial value creation, and enhanced supply security and independence in Europe. At the same time, they create jobs and send a strong signal for Hesse as a modern industrial location."
