Germany's €49 travel pass jumps to €63 as growth slows in 2024
Germany’s popular €49 monthly travel pass has seen its price rise to €63 in 2024. The scheme, launched on May 1, 2023, allows unlimited travel on regional and local transport nationwide. Around 14.5 million people currently use the pass, but recent growth has slowed. The travel pass was introduced to make public transport more affordable and reduce fuel consumption. Officials estimate it saves at least 500 million litres of fuel each year. To cover lost revenue, federal and state governments each contribute €1.5 billion annually.
Despite its success, the German Association of Transport and Railway News (EVN) reports little increase in subscriptions in recent months. Experts suggest up to 5.8 million more people could still sign up. Meanwhile, the federal government is reintroducing a temporary fuel subsidy from May 1 to June 30. From 2027, the pass price will adjust yearly based on an inflation-linked index. This change aims to balance affordability with long-term funding for public transport.
The travel pass remains a key part of Germany’s efforts to cut fuel use and promote public transport. With 14.5 million users, it continues to shape travel habits across the country. Future price adjustments will depend on economic conditions and subscription trends.
