Aldi Süd sells its luxury Öschberghof hotel to refocus on retail core
Aldi Süd has agreed to sell its luxury hotel, the Öschberghof, to the Gustav Zech Foundation. The deal marks a shift in strategy as the retailer focuses on its core supermarket business. Approval from antitrust regulators is still required before the sale can be finalised. The Öschberghof has been part of Aldi Süd’s portfolio since the mid-1970s. In 2024, the hotel recorded revenue of €30.7 million, making it a profitable but non-core asset for the company. The decision to sell follows a broader restructuring effort, including centralising operations at its Salzburg headquarters and cutting jobs in areas like Aldi DX.
Last year, the company also ended its joint online shop with Aldi Nord, signalling a move away from non-retail ventures. Under the new ownership, the Gustav Zech Foundation will take over, but day-to-day operations will remain unchanged. Michael Artner, the current managing director, is set to stay in his role after the transition. The Zech Group, which will run the hotel post-sale, has experience in the hospitality sector. Aldi Süd has emphasised that the change in ownership will not disrupt services for guests or staff.
The sale of the Öschberghof is part of Aldi Süd’s plan to streamline its business and concentrate on retail. Once antitrust approval is granted, the hotel will operate under new ownership while maintaining its existing management and staff. The deal reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to refocus resources on its supermarket chain.
