Germany and Portugal strengthen economic and defence cooperation in Berlin talks

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to deepen economic ties with Portugal during a visit by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The two leaders will discuss trade, digital transformation, and defence cooperation in Berlin. Merz has highlighted strong demand for German IT expertise in Portugal. He also sees major opportunities in collaboration between Lufthansa and Portugal’s flag carrier, TAP Air Portugal. Meanwhile, Montenegro pointed to a 150% surge in Portuguese tech exports in 2025, crediting German companies for their role in the country’s economic growth.

The digitalisation ministers of both nations are already working on concrete projects to push forward digital transformation. Beyond technology, the leaders stressed the need to expand trade with other countries through new agreements.

Defence was another key topic. Merz mentioned Portugal’s potential purchase of the Boxer armoured vehicle system, which could strengthen military integration between the two nations. The talks aim to boost economic and defence partnerships. Germany and Portugal plan to build on existing trade links while exploring new areas of cooperation. Both sides see long-term benefits in closer collaboration.
