German ABL sector weathered 2025 challenges with cautious optimism for 2026

German Lab Tech Industry Remains Resilient Ahead of analytica 2026

Ahead of analytica, the world's leading trade fair for laboratory technology, biotechnology, and analytics—set to take place in Munich from March 24 to 27, 2026—the German analysis, biotech, and lab technology (ABL) sector continues to demonstrate resilience, despite a challenging market environment. According to the German industry association SPECTARIS, business performance in 2025 saw a slight decline.

The roughly 330 German manufacturers in the sector generated total revenue of around €11.2 billion, a decrease of 0.6%. While domestic sales fell to approximately €5.1 billion (down 1.6%), foreign business remained stable at about €6.1 billion (up 0.2%). Although German exports to EU countries rose by more than 5% in the first three quarters of 2025, shipments to the industry's two most important markets—the United States and China—dropped by 10% and 6%, respectively, compared to the previous year.

International expansion has been a key driver of success for the sector in recent years: more than half of all production (with an export ratio of around 54%) is sold abroad. The industry employs roughly 52,500 people.

"Despite a demanding market environment, our sector remains robust," says Mathis Kuchejda, Chair of the Analysis, Biotech, and Lab Technology division at SPECTARIS. "Analytical, biotech, and lab technology forms an indispensable foundation for innovation in life sciences, environmental analytics, and many other future-oriented fields. analytica impressively showcases the industry's capacity for innovation."

For 2026, most companies anticipate revenue growth of around three to four percent. However, the outlook remains uncertain. The potential economic impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East—including tensions involving Iran—is difficult to assess at present.

Long-term prospects for the sector remain positive, with the global market continuing to expand. Experts forecast annual growth of around five percent in the coming years, driven by automation, robotics, rising investments in life sciences, pharmaceutical research, environmental analytics, and modern laboratory infrastructure.

With the newly published "Trend Report: Analysis, Biotech, and Lab Technology 2026/2027," SPECTARIS provides an overview of the sector's key markets, developments, and opportunities, offering a comprehensive profile of Germany's analytical, biotech, and lab technology industry.
