Fulda Diocese Tackles Abuse, Finances, and 2026 Hessentag Plans
The 2025 Autumn General Assembly of the Diocesan Pastoral Council in Fulda wrapped up with lively discussions and a strong focus on collaboration. Key topics included the diocese's response to sexual abuse, financial pressures, and plans for future events like the 2026 Hessentag festival in Fulda.
The assembly opened with the release of the final report by the Independent Commission for the Investigation of Sexual Abuse. Stefanie Klee, chair of the council, stressed that addressing abuse remains a priority and called for ongoing engagement on the issue. In response, a new specialist unit will be set up within the Bishop's General Vicariate from October 1, focusing on prevention, intervention, and accountability.
Financial struggles were another major concern, as declining church tax revenues push the diocese toward budget cuts and a revised property management strategy. The proposed property plan triggered debate, with many urging better communication to win support from parishes. Lay representatives also proposed creating a climate protection manager role within the diocese. Chair Klee encouraged members to help prepare for the 2026 Hessentag festival, ensuring a strong Catholic presence at the event. Throughout the assembly, the close working relationship between the Diocesan Pastoral Council and diocesan leadership was highlighted as essential for tackling these challenges.
The assembly concluded with clear next steps: a new prevention unit will launch in October, while budget and property plans move forward. The diocese will also focus on climate initiatives and preparations for the Hessentag festival. These decisions reflect the council's commitment to addressing both financial and ethical responsibilities.
