Drunk driver leads police on 30-minute chase across southern Hesse
A 59-year-old man led police on a 30-minute chase through southern Hesse early on Tuesday morning. The incident began after officers spotted him driving erratically near Wilhelmsdorf. His licence had already been revoked due to prior convictions, yet he continued to flee until crashing into a police vehicle in Darmstadt. The pursuit started around 7:15 am when patrol units noticed a gray VW Tiguan swerving on the L3063 towards the B275. The driver ignored repeated signals to pull over and instead accelerated, forcing officers to give chase.
The chase escalated as the man broke through road barriers and weaved onto major highways, including the A661, A5, and A672. Multiple police departments coordinated to track his movements, but he refused to stop until colliding with a police car on Bismarckstraße in Darmstadt. Authorities arrested him at the scene and transported him to a local station. A blood test was conducted to determine his alcohol level. His vehicle was later impounded under orders from the public prosecutor’s office. A new investigation has since been launched by the Hesse State Police Headquarters West, based in Wiesbaden.
The man remains in custody while the investigation continues. Police have confirmed the press office can be reached at (0611) 345-1045/1041/1042 or via email at [email protected] for further details. The case will now proceed under the direction of the public prosecutor.
