Routine Check After Theft Uncovers Multiple CrimesBad Camberg, A3 Autobahn, Friday, September 26, 2025, 9:00 PM
What began as a routine check following a theft report turned into a busy night for highway police. Initially, motorists had alerted authorities to a silver Mazda with Belgian license plates swerving erratically southbound on the A3. Officers set up a checkpoint to intercept the vehicle. Shortly afterward, staff at the Bad Camberg-West service station reported that the occupants of a Belgian-registered Mazda had just stolen items from the shop.
The patrol quickly located the car and confirmed the reckless driving. Officers pulled the vehicle over at the Medenbach rest area for inspectionābut the driver complied reluctantly, only stopping after repeated orders. Once detained, police discovered the passenger carrying a balaclava in his pocket, while the car contained both the stolen goods and narcotics. All three occupants were heavily intoxicated; the driver blew over 2.4 per mille in a breath test, prompting a mandatory blood draw.
One suspect became aggressive in custody, attempting self-harm and requiring restraints. After processing, two of the three men were released. The third, however, was subject to a deportation order and was brought before a magistrate before being transferred to detention.
The night's surprises weren't over: when officers later inspected the Mazdaāparked and locked at the Medenbach rest stopāthey found a broken side window and one of the released men asleep inside. He claimed to have found the car already damaged and decided to sleep in it. Police removed him, and the vehicle was towed for safekeeping. The men eventually provided proof of ownership and were allowed to leave once sober.
Highway police investigators now have multiple new cases to process.
