Wiesbaden's Election Recount Shifts Council Seats and Coalition Dynamics
A recount of Wiesbaden's municipal election has changed the city council's makeup. The adjustment means the CDU loses a seat, dropping from 22 to 21 representatives. Meanwhile, Lukas Haker of the satirical party Die Partei now gains entry into the chamber.
The recount followed concerns over incorrectly invalidated ballots. Many voters had marked two party lists while also selecting individual candidates, leading to their votes being wrongly dismissed.
As a result, Martin Woitschell will no longer take a council seat. The final distribution now stands at: CDU 21, SPD 18, Greens 12, AfD 10, Left Party 6, FDP 4, Volt 4, Die Partei 1, Justice Party 1, BSW 1, FWG 1, PdF 1, Freie Wähler 1, and Pro Auto 1. BLW retains no seats. The changes could affect government formation, potentially allowing the current ruling coalition to stay in power. However, unresolved issues in the Nordost district's mail-in voting precinct have led to calls for a repeat election there.
The shift in seats alters the council's balance, with the CDU now holding one fewer representative. The recount also highlights procedural challenges in vote validation. A decision on the Nordost district's repeat election remains pending.
