Wellritzstraße's pedestrian zone expansion kicks off in Wiesbaden on 18 May

Construction on the second phase of the Wellritzstraße pedestrian zone in Wiesbaden will start on 18 May 2024. The project marks a key step in completing the street’s redesign, which began earlier this year. It also fulfils a long-standing request from the Westend Local Advisory Council. The first of eight planned construction phases will begin with a full closure near Hellmundstraße. Cyclists will face restrictions during this initial stage, though pedestrians can still use their usual routes. Delivery traffic will be diverted via Walramstraße to maintain access to and from Wellritzstraße.

Once completed, the redesigned street will feature a level, barrier-free surface with outdoor dining spaces, seating, and new tree-planting areas. Bicycle parking will also be added. The street will be closed to through traffic at both ends using retractable bollards, similar to the existing section between Helenenstraße and Hellmundstraße. The entire project is scheduled to run until mid-December 2024. For further details, an interactive map of construction projects in Wiesbaden is available online.

The redesign aims to create a more accessible and pedestrian-friendly Wellritzstraße. Work will continue in phases, with traffic adjustments in place until the project’s completion. The final result will include improved amenities for both residents and visitors.
