Violence and vandalism erupt in Wetterau district amid election tensions
A series of disturbing incidents unfolded across the Wetterau district on Tuesday. Police dealt with cases ranging from political vandalism to violent assaults and theft. One arrest was made after a man shouted extremist slogans and threatened a passerby with a water bottle.
The day began with a robbery in Nieder-Mörlen. A 68-year-old woman had her wallet stolen while shopping in a supermarket. The thief distracted her before taking the cash and fleeing.
Later, in Friedberg, a 30-year-old man was arrested for a public disturbance. Witnesses reported he shouted 'Heil Hitler' and tried to hit a bystander with a glass water bottle. Officers took him into custody shortly after.
That evening, an election poster for the Free Voters party was found burning on a park bench along Zanderstraße in Bad Nauheim. A man in dark clothing was seen running from the scene before police arrived. The suspects, described as around 30 years old, 160 cm tall, slim, with darker complexions and black hair, wore dark clothes and white sneakers.
No official statistics on election poster vandalism have been published in the Wetteraukreis or Gießen region over the past five years. Local media reports suggest dozens of similar cases, though exact numbers remain unclear.
Authorities are investigating the incidents separately. The arrested man in Friedberg faces charges for incitement and assault. Meanwhile, police continue to search for those responsible for the robbery and the arson attack on the campaign poster.
