Baden-Württemberg invests €243,000 to uplift independent theaters across the region

The state of Baden-Württemberg is bolstering the creative work of its independent theaters with project funding totaling around €243,000. Seven private theaters in Rottenburg, Offenburg, Rottweil, Freiburg, Schorndorf, and Stuttgart have been selected for support—including three puppet theaters. Additionally, Stuttgart's Materialtheater ensemble will receive two years of conceptual funding.

Arne Braun, Secretary of State for the Arts, states: "Our independent theaters move audiences with their productions—tackling issues like social division or the future of our democracy. And that's why we're giving them a boost. A vibrant theater scene strengthens social cohesion and public discourse. These plays don't just entertain; they spark discussions. I'm looking forward to every single stage adventure in these theaters."

The ministry supports projects that would not be possible without assistance. Many theaters are struggling with rising costs, which is why the state increased the maximum funding per project to up to €40,000 as early as 2024. A jury selects the projects each year.
