Russians warned: Unpaid debts could block your foreign travel plans
Russian citizens planning to travel abroad are being reminded to check their legal status before departure. The Federal Security Service (FSB) Directorate for the Republic of Komi has issued guidance on restrictions that could prevent people from leaving the country. These rules apply to those with unpaid debts or unresolved court obligations. Under Russian law, travellers may be barred from leaving if they owe more than 30,000 rubles in unpaid debts. A lower threshold of 10,000 rubles applies to unpaid alimony, compensation, or damages. Restrictions also come into force if a debtor fails to pay over 10,000 rubles within two months after the voluntary repayment period ends.
Non-financial obligations, such as those outlined in an enforcement order, can also lead to travel bans. The Federal Bailiff Service (FSSP) advises citizens to verify their status before booking flights. This can be done through the FSSP’s official website or by contacting a local branch. The reminder comes as Syktyvkar Airport prepares to resume international flights in May 2026. Authorities are urging residents to settle any outstanding obligations well in advance to avoid last-minute complications.
The FSB’s warning highlights the need for travellers to review their legal standing before attempting to cross borders. Those with unresolved debts or court orders could face delays or outright travel bans. Checking with the FSSP remains the simplest way to confirm whether restrictions apply.
