Rolls-Royce secures landmark deal for Germany's Puma infantry vehicles
Rolls-Royce Power Systems (RRPS) has won a major contract to supply propulsion systems for Germany's Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The deal, one of the largest in the company's history, will see 200 advanced power units delivered starting in 2028. The Puma, a high-tech replacement for the older Marder vehicle, has been in service since 2013, with around 350 already deployed.
The new propulsion systems feature a compact ten-cylinder engine producing 800 kilowatts of power. Each unit also includes power electronics, a cooling system, and a transmission built by Renk. These components are designed to enhance the Puma's performance on the battlefield.
To handle the increased demand, RRPS is expanding its production facilities. New assembly lines, additional skilled workers, and modernised equipment will boost capacity. This growth follows a strong financial year in 2021, where the company's revenue rose by 19% to €5.72 billion, with an adjusted operating profit of €995 million. The contract strengthens RRPS's position as a key supplier to the German Armed Forces. Defence experts see this partnership as vital for maintaining technological superiority and national security. The Puma itself is considered a flagship of German military engineering, replacing the ageing Marder fleet with modern capabilities.
Delivery of the propulsion systems will begin in 2028, marking a significant step in upgrading Germany's armoured forces. The expanded production lines and workforce at RRPS will support future defence projects. This long-term agreement ensures continued collaboration between the company and the military.
