Rodgau Business Association Cancels Spring, Pumpkin, and Christmas Markets

Rodgau's iconic markets to close after 2026 due to rising costs

The Rodgau Business Association will no longer organize spring, pumpkin, or Christmas markets after the spring market on April 26, 2026, following a decision made at its annual general meeting. The association cited rising costs, stricter safety and organizational requirements, and a lack of financial and personnel resources as the primary reasons. Meanwhile, the city of Rodgau has rejected claims that it withdrew support for these events.

Final Spring Market to Proceed in 2026

The spring market at the end of April will still take place as planned. However, after that, the association will no longer host its traditional markets. The Easter well decoration and the maypole tradition will continue.

The association described the decision as the result of a long-term trend that has intensified in recent years. Tobias Schott, an organizer and board member of the business association, explained: "This was not a snap decision but the outcome of a development that has built up over several years and recently come to a head." He noted that organizing such events now requires an effort "far beyond what many outsiders might realize."

According to the association, costs have risen across nearly all areas—including planning, transport, technology, infrastructure, energy, staffing, cleaning, waste disposal, and insurance. Additionally, more comprehensive safety protocols, increased coordination with authorities, and higher demands for crowd control measures have added to the burden. Schott stated: "Under current conditions, we can no longer assume this level of responsibility in a way that meets our own standards and the public's expectations."

City Rejects Criticism Over Lack of Support

The city of Rodgau confirmed it had been informed of the business association's decision. Mayor Max Breitenbach said the association had indicated that the events were no longer financially viable, primarily due to rising costs and vendors' reluctance to accept higher fees.

However, the city disputed claims that it had reduced support to the point of causing the current situation. Breitenbach stated: "We cannot understand this criticism in its current form, especially since it was never presented to us in these terms." He described cooperation with the association as "always clearly regulated" and recently characterized by "trust-based dialogue."

The city clarified that its municipal budget had not previously provided significant financial support for the markets. Instead, assistance was given in areas such as safety planning and traffic signage. The business association had received the same level of funding as other local groups. A prior sponsorship arrangement with the city's utility company had already ended several years ago.

Past Funding from Utility Company Discontinued

The business association reported that until 2024, the Rodgau utility company had provided annual support of €15,000, partly as direct funding and partly through in-kind contributions, such as providing a stage or promotional services for events.

The association now states that "virtually no funding" remains available. The city, meanwhile, emphasized that given its budget constraints, it cannot cover potential deficits or take over the markets itself. Breitenbach remarked: "These were never city-run events but initiatives by the business association to support local commerce." He added: "While we regret the association's decision, we respect it."

Shift Toward Networking and Exchange

The business association plans to refocus its efforts on networking and dialogue among local businesses.

The association now plans a significant shift in direction. Following its annual general meeting, officials stated that many past activities had benefited individuals but "not the greater good." Moving forward, the business association aims to position itself more firmly as a network for entrepreneurs, focusing on exchange, knowledge sharing, partnerships, and joint development—even beyond Rodgau's borders.

The withdrawal from market organization does not signal an end to events altogether but rather the conclusion of their previous format. The association remains open to fresh ideas and collaborations. In a statement, it declared: "At the same time, we are looking ahead. We welcome new approaches, partnerships, and alternative concepts that will make such events possible in the future—though on a foundation that is sustainable and fair for all involved."
