Offenbach's old freight station to become eco-friendly homes and daycare

A new residential and daycare building will rise on the site of Offenbach's former freight railway station. The project, led by municipal developer GBO, follows a design competition won by Darmstadt-based firm planquadrat. Their proposal stood out for its modern approach, sustainability focus, and integration with the surrounding area.

The winning concept will include around 70 subsidised apartments, a daycare centre for five groups, and an underground car park. Construction will take place in the B5 development zone on a 3,300-square-metre plot. Five established architecture firms were invited to submit designs for the project. The jury, made up of city planners, youth welfare officials, independent experts, and GBO's managing director, evaluated each proposal based on strict criteria. Key requirements included low-energy standards to align with Offenbach's climate targets.

Planquadrat's design earned top marks for its urban appeal, architectural cohesion with the nearby grammar school, and thoughtful mobility solutions. The jury also highlighted its cost-effectiveness and high residential quality. While specific sustainable technologies were not detailed, the low-energy focus remains central to the plans.

From August 15 to 29, 2023, all five submitted designs will be displayed in an exhibition at the town hall. This gives residents a chance to view the proposals before construction begins under GBO's management.

The project marks a transformation of the former freight station area into a mixed-use space. Alongside housing, the daycare centre will serve local families, while the underground garage addresses parking needs. The new development will add much-needed housing and childcare facilities to Offenbach. GBO will oversee construction, ensuring the building meets energy-efficiency goals and urban design standards. Once completed, the site will combine residential living, early education, and sustainable infrastructure in the heart of the city.
