Joint press release from the Public Prosecutor's Office Darmstadt and the South Hesse Police Headquarters
After intensive investigations by the police, a 33-year-old man was arrested at his residence in Oberzent on Tuesday (23.9.). He is suspected of multiple cases of arson, including near a forest area. Witness statements strengthened the suspicion against the man.
The 33-year-old is believed to have set fires in at least four cases in the area of Oberzent between May and September 2025. Further investigations will also examine whether the suspect could be the perpetrator for other cases of arson. In total, there have been around 18 suspected cases of arson in the Oberzent area since 2020.
On Wednesday (24.9.), the suspect was presented to the examining magistrate at the Michelstadt Local Court at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office Darmstadt. The magistrate ordered the execution of investigative custody due to an existing risk of repetition. The 33-year-old was then taken into custody in a detention facility.
Investigations are ongoing.
