From a temporary cleaner to a 34-year veteran, these workers shaped Marburg's public sector. Their stories reveal loyalty, growth, and decades of quiet impact.

Jubilarians celebrate 360 years of service together

**The city of Marburg honored long-serving employees at a reception in the town hall. Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies thanked those who have been working in the public service for 25 and 40 years for decades of commitment.**

"I find it highly remarkable and above all noteworthy how committed you all have remained to the public service and thus to serving the citizens. For the years of dedication and expertise you have brought to the table, I would like to thank you very much," said Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies during a reception in the town hall on the occasion of the service anniversaries of municipal employees with 25 and 40 years of service. Together, the employees to be honored bring 360 years of experience.

Michaela Hajra from the municipal works council also thanked the jubilarians for their commitment, reliability, and warmth that they have brought to the administration.

Honored for 25 years of service:

**Petra Traber** has been with the city of Marburg since the year 2000. After working as a temporary cleaning lady at the Theodor-Heuss School, she worked as a cleaning lady at the Sophie-von-Brabant School from 2001 to 2020. Since 2020, Petra Traber has been working in the telephone switchboard of the city.

**Burkhard Vial** began his apprenticeship as a gardener in the garden and landscape construction with the company Ernst Balzer in Hatzfeld-Eifa in 1985. He worked there as a skilled worker from 1988 to 2000. In 2000, he switched to the city of Marburg. At the operational office - now the service provider of the city of Marburg (DBM) - he then brought his knowledge as a skilled worker for garden and landscape construction until the end of 2023. Since January 2024, he has been working in the department of city greenery, cemeteries and green services.

**Sonja Berth** attended the administrative academy in Wiesbaden from 2000 to 2003. She passed the examination for the higher service in the state insurance institution of Hesse in Frankfurt and obtained her degree as a graduate administrator. Berth worked for seven years at the state insurance institution until she switched to the district office of the Lahn-Dill district in Wetzlar in 2010. In 2023, Sonja Berth finally ended up with the city of Marburg and in the department of personnel.

**GĂŒlcan Can** came to Germany in 1986. Before that, she worked as a seamstress in Turkey. She brought her knowledge from 1990 to 1997 in the business Marburger leather goods. A year later, she worked as a cleaning lady in the Olympia cleaning Marburg. From 2000 to 2001, Can started working as a temporary cleaning lady at the city of Marburg. Subsequently, she worked as a cleaning lady in the Kita Michelbach until 2004, in the Emil-von-Behring School until 2009 and since then in the Kaethe-Kollwitz School.

**Martina Emmerich** completed her apprenticeship as a administrative management assistant from 2000 to 2003 at the University of Marburg. Afterwards, she worked in the department of social affairs until 2013 and simultaneously completed the further training to become a administrative management officer from 2009 to 2012. From 2013 to 2023, Emmerich worked in the department of school and has been working in the department of all-day care and school support since then.

**Sabrina Hartung** began her career with the city of Marburg in the year 2000. In 2003, she completed her apprenticeship as a office communication clerk and then worked at the Volkshochschule Marburg for ten years. From 2010 to 2013, she completed further training to become a administrative management officer. Today, she works in the team of the department of central youth welfare services. **Iris Siegel** started her career as a trainee in early childhood education at the **Höhenweg** kindergarten in Marburg in the year 2000. She stayed there until 2006. After a family phase, she returned to work in 2009 at the **Eisenacher Weg** kindergarten, briefly moved to the **Erfurter Straße** kindergarten, and then returned to the **Eisenacher Weg**. From 2012 to 2023, she worked as an educator at the **Allnatal** kindergarten. Iris Siegel is now an employee in the office of the representative for disabled persons.

**Stefan Masloff** completed his apprenticeship as an electrician at the **Kujus** company in Marburg in 1998. He then went on to train as a prison officer at the **Weiterstadt** prison. He worked there until 2002. In the same year, he joined the city of Marburg and worked as a public order police officer at the public order office until 2010. He then moved to the cash and accounting department, where he worked as a full-time employee until 2015. After that, he returned to the public order office as a public order police officer. Stefan Masloff is still a public order police officer for the city of Marburg, currently in the safety and traffic monitoring department.

Honored for 40 years of service:

**Michael Bodenbender** completed his basic military service before working as an inspector trainee for the Hessian welfare administration in Gießen from 1986 to 1989. He then moved to Marburg in 1990, working in the social services department. Since 2021, he has been active in the building supervision department.

**Bernd Fischer** began his training as an administrative assistant at the city of Marburg after completing his civilian service with the German Red Cross in 1984. Until 2021, he worked as an administrative assistant in various departments of the city. Among others, he worked in the social welfare office, the legal service, the public order office, the building yard, the youth center, the works council, and the messenger service. Since 2021, Bernd Fischer has been working in the technical services department.

**Petra Heuser** completed her traineeship as an educator in Göttingen in 1983 and came to Marburg as a temporary educator. Until 1986, she worked as an educator at the **Emil-von-Behring-Straße** and **Höhenweg** kindergartens. She then took over the management of the **Höhenweg** kindergarten from 1986 to 1989 and again from 1990 to 2004. After that, she worked as a pedagogical employee and later as the deputy head of the children's care department. She remained there until 2019. Since then, Petra Heuser has been the head of the elderly care planning department.

**Norbert Preis** completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter at the **Vaupel** carpentry shop in Marburg from 1977 to 1980. As a journeyman, he worked there until 1982 and briefly at the **GrĂŒn** carpentry shop in Rauischholzhausen. He returned there after his military service but moved back to the **Vaupel** carpentry shop in 1986. In the same year, he joined the university city, where he worked as a carpenter and briefly as the foreman of the craftsmen's squad in the building supervision department. Since 2024, Norbert Preis has been in retirement.
