Man arrested after stealing from unlocked cars in Riedstadt
A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Riedstadt after allegedly stealing from an unlocked car. Police caught him near the train station with stolen goods, including wireless headphones and a wallet. Authorities are now investigating both theft charges and his legal status in Germany.
This incident follows a string of similar crimes in the region over the past year, with around 150 thefts reported from unlocked vehicles in Groß-Gerau district alone.
The theft took place late on January 9 on Kasseler Straße in Goddelau. The car's owner noticed a man trying to break in and immediately called the police. Officers quickly detained the suspect nearby, where they found the stolen items in his possession.
Investigators later confirmed the goods had been taken from an unlocked car on Goethestraße. The suspect, who remains unnamed, now faces charges for theft and is also under scrutiny for potentially living in Germany without authorisation. Local police have repeatedly warned residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables. Thieves often exploit unlocked cars, grabbing visible items in seconds. Authorities urge witnesses to call the emergency number 110 rather than confronting suspects themselves.
The arrest highlights ongoing issues with car thefts in the area. Over the past 12 months, around 150 similar incidents were recorded in Groß-Gerau district. Police continue to stress the importance of securing vehicles to prevent further crimes.
