Hünfeld's Firefighters Set New Records in Youth Growth and Operations
Hünfeld's fire departments have reported a successful year, with strong growth in youth engagement and operational readiness. At their annual general meeting, officials highlighted record participation and major investments in infrastructure.
The town's seven children's brigades now lead the district, while new leadership roles were filled to support future training.
In 2025, Hünfeld's 316 active firefighters responded to 336 calls, including 52 false alarms and 44 operations beyond the town's borders. The department also set a new record, with 107 members now certified as breathing apparatus wearers.
Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok praised the teams for their youth outreach, noting that Hünfeld's seven children's brigades count 115 members—the largest in the district. A significant 70% of the force is under 40, with an average age of 37 for men and 30 for women, thanks to recruitment efforts and relocations. At the meeting, Leon Bayer was unanimously elected as the new city youth fire chief, supported by deputies Felix Schiffhauer and Johanna Stallknecht. Meanwhile, City Fire Inspector André van Gerven called the Fulda district's fire service the most capable in the region, citing its ability to handle every challenge. Investments have also been a priority, with €1.3 million allocated to upgrade fire stations in Michelsrombach and Mackenzell. Additional funds will go toward new vehicles, and a feasibility study is now underway for modernising the central fire station. No nationwide data exists for departments of similar size, as statistics remain limited to isolated reports like those from Landshut (1,376 operations with 436 members) and Potsdam.
The annual review confirmed Hünfeld's fire service as a regional leader in training and infrastructure. With expanded youth programmes and ongoing upgrades, the department is preparing for future demands. Officials will continue monitoring operational trends as investments take shape.
