Hesse transforms historic Alte Post into 250 student apartments by 2027
The state of Hesse has bought the Alte Post building in Offenbach to turn it into a new student residence. The project will provide around 250 single apartments and is set to open by the 2027 winter semester. The site sits in a central location, directly opposite Offenbach Central Station. The purchase was funded using money from the sale of the former Frankfurt police headquarters. Hesse will hand the Alte Post over to Studierendenwerk Frankfurt am Main rent-free for development. Total costs for the conversion are estimated at €28 million.
Once completed, the residence will help Offenbach exceed its 10% target for student housing. Offenbach University of Art and Design will then have the best student housing provision of any art school in Germany. The state's broader goal is to ensure one in ten students across Hesse can access subsidised accommodation. No further details have been released about additional dormitory projects in the Rhein-Main region beyond this one.
The new residence will add 250 rooms to Offenbach's student housing stock. It is scheduled for completion in time for the 2027 winter semester. The project aligns with Hesse's ongoing efforts to expand affordable student living options.
