Hanau cracks down on littering and traffic with stricter patrols and bollards
Hanau has stepped up policing in its city centre as warmer weather brings more people outdoors. Municipal officers are now patrolling more frequently, focusing on littering, dog waste, and traffic violations. The city has also announced plans to install new automatic bollards by summer 2024.
The increased patrols come after a rise in foot traffic downtown and along the Main riverfront. Bicycle officers have been deployed in public parks, while plainclothes teams recorded over 300 offences in recent weeks. These included littering, dog fouling, smoking on playgrounds, and traffic violations.
During checks on Nürnberger Straße, officers stopped dozens of vehicles and issued 16 fines. They also held around 50 conversations with residents, often giving verbal warnings instead of penalties. City Councilor Isabelle Hemsley confirmed that stricter controls, including higher fines for dog waste and cigarette litter, are now in full effect.
To further restrict unauthorised vehicles, Hanau will install 20 automatic bollard systems across the city centre. The first sets will appear on Nürnberger Straße and at Freiheitsplatz before summer.
Residents have responded positively to the changes, praising the municipal police for their visibility and enforcement. The new bollards, combined with tougher fines and more patrols, aim to keep the city centre cleaner and safer. The measures will remain in place as temperatures continue to rise.
