Guided tour explores Gießen's Cold War refugee camp on April 18
An organised excursion will take visitors through the Gießen Emergency Reception Camp Learning and Remembrance Site on April 18. The event, arranged by the Marburg-Biedenkopf County Adult Education Center (vhs), offers a chance to explore a key location in German-German history. Participants will join a guided tour before exploring the site independently.
The site opened in summer 2025 to preserve the memory of Gießen's role during Germany's division. Here, refugees and emigrants from East Germany could submit emergency admission applications under the Aufnahmegesetz (1950–1990). The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in Gießen processed these cases, though exact numbers remain undocumented.
The excursion runs from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and costs €3.20 per person. Attendees must arrange their own transport to the location. A guided tour will highlight important exhibits from the permanent display, followed by free time for individual visits. Registration is required by April 10. Interested participants can sign up online or through the vhs Marburg Land office.
The excursion provides an opportunity to learn about Gießen's historical significance in German reunification. Those attending will gain insights into the experiences of East German refugees and emigrants. Advance booking ensures a place on the tour, with limited spots available.
