Google Maps now reveals deleted reviews on German business listings
Google Maps has begun flagging deleted reviews on business listings across Germany. The move comes as several local establishments in Mainz see large numbers of customer ratings removed. Some venues have lost hundreds of reviews in recent months.
The new transparency alert displays the total number of deleted posts as a range over the past year. It follows concerns about businesses exploiting legal loopholes to shape their online reputations.
A number of Mainz businesses have experienced significant review deletions. Brauhaus zur Sonne in the Old Town has lost between 201 and 250 customer ratings. CafĂ© Extrablatt has seen over 250 reviews removed, while GĂŒnayâs CafĂ© has had 151 to 200 taken downâaccounting for 21% to 26% of its total feedback.
Thai Express in Römerpassage also faced a three-digit number of deletions, with 17% to 33% of its reviews wiped. Meanwhile, heimat-mainz now has just 32 reviews remaining after 21 to 50 were removed. German law permits companies to request the removal of false factual claims or unjustified opinions that could damage their commercial reputation. This has led to accusations that some businesses are manipulating their overall ratings by filing numerous takedown requests. Google maintains that reviews play a crucial role in helping customers make informed choices. The tech giantâs new alert system will display the range of deleted reviews for each business over the past 365 days. The feature aims to provide greater clarity on why ratings may have changed.
The changes mean users will now see when large numbers of reviews have been removed from a business profile. The transparency measure applies specifically to deletions made under German defamation laws. Businesses can still request removals, but the total count of deleted posts will now be visible to the public.
