Giessen Launches Free E-Bike Safety Course for Seniors in 2026
Giessen's Prevention and Communication Unit (Prävko) is launching a new road safety course for seniors who ride pedelecs and e-bikes. The training aims to boost confidence and reduce accidents among older cyclists. Registration is now open for the first session in May 2026.
The number of over-60s using e-bikes and pedelecs in Giessen has grown steadily. Alongside this trend, accident rates and serious injuries in this age group have climbed sharply. To address the issue, Prävko has developed a practical training programme.
The course will teach essential skills like proper braking, judging speeds, and safe starts. Participants will also learn key traffic rules and how to handle common hazards. The first session runs on May 6, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Prävko is working with the regional traffic police to deliver the training. Those interested can sign up via the City of Giessen's website or by emailing Prävko directly.
The initiative comes as more seniors in Giessen adopt e-bikes and pedelecs for transport. By improving skills and awareness, the programme seeks to cut accident risks. Registration details are available through the city's official channels.
