Freiburg University waives fees for 50 Iranian students amid financial crisis

The University of Freiburg has waived tuition fees for around 50 Iranian students in the summer semester of 2026. This move comes as financial strain grows among students due to rising tensions in Iran. Authorities in Baden-Württemberg are now exploring broader solutions for international learners facing similar challenges. Escalating tensions in Iran have left many students struggling to afford their studies. International students from non-EU countries in Baden-Württemberg usually pay €1,500 per semester. The University of Freiburg stepped in by using its discretion to waive fees for those in acute hardship.

All applications from affected Iranian students were approved. The decision reflects the university's policy to support learners during crises. Meanwhile, student services across the region are providing emergency aid, including hardship funds.

Science Minister Petra Olschowski has called on universities to simplify support for impacted students. Some policymakers are now discussing whether to scrap tuition fees entirely for international students. The aim is to prevent future financial crises from disrupting education. The fee waiver at Freiburg will ease immediate pressure on Iranian students. Emergency funds and potential policy changes could offer longer-term relief. For now, affected learners can continue their studies without the burden of tuition costs.
