Region: Dubious Business Practices That Could Amount to Fraud

Fraud probe targets Gifhorn construction firm after homeowners lose €300K+

A group of affected homeowners has come forward with allegations against a construction firm based in the Gifhorn district (Samtgemeinde Meinersen). The clients, who hail from across the region between the Harz mountains and the Lüneburg Heath, claim they hired the company in question (whose name is known to the editorial team) for work on their homes, paid substantial upfront sums—and are now left empty-handed. According to a summary of cases provided to regionalHeute.de by one of the victims, the total financial damage exceeds €300,000. How did this happen?

Many of the cases follow a similar pattern: The accused firm, specializing in construction and renovation work in the Gifhorn district, was contracted for a wide range of home improvements—drywall installation, facade insulation, attic conversions, and photovoltaic systems, all under one roof. The company allegedly demanded large advance payments before starting work, only to deliver incomplete or substandard results. At a certain point, construction sites ground to a halt—and remain abandoned to this day. To date, many clients have yet to recover their money.

Public Prosecutor's Office Launches Investigation

The affected homeowners also report multiple changes in the company's management. Initially, the original point of contact presented himself as the managing director, only to be replaced later by his wife (their names are known to the editorial team). Publicly available corporate records, however, show that the current managing director did not take over from his wife until November 2025.

Does this amount to fraud—or even a systematic scam? The victims' accounts strongly suggest as much. When contacted by regionalHeute.de, the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that it is investigating the company's managing director "on suspicion of fraud." The probe remains ongoing.

Fraud, Theft, and Document Forgery

The cases described to regionalHeute.de read like a scandal. Beyond the allegedly fraudulent conduct of the construction firm's boss, they involve theft and document forgery.

Take one example: A couple from Braunschweig (whose names are known to the editorial team) was under tight deadlines to renovate their older home when the accused contractor appeared on the scene. This is how the homeowner and property owner describes the situation in an interview with regionalHeute.de: "He gained our trust, posed as our savior, and then exploited our desperation." She now puts her financial losses at €140,000.

The reason? She had commissioned the Gifhorn-based contractor for extensive work totaling €250,000, including drywall, plumbing, window installation, facade insulation, electrical work, and photovoltaic systems. For the windows and major material orders, the Braunschweig couple made substantial advance payments after the company's manager issued invoices for deposits.

Construction was supposed to be completed by September 2024—a deadline the contractor had confidently promised in May of that year. But little progress followed. First, materials arrived in short supply; then, work stopped altogether. The deadline became impossible to meet. "We had a crisis meeting in February 2025, exchanged a few more emails, and then we involved our lawyer," the victim recalls.

After the company's last appearance on-site, the construction site was left in disarray. "Most of the plaster had to be torn out, and we found exposed cable ends in the drywall," she reports.

Court Judgment Proved Useless—Now Victims Speak Out

In court, the victims obtained an enforceable judgment, but it has so far led nowhere. The woman affected then secured a disclosure of the debtor's assets. During this process, the accused claimed to have filed for bankruptcy—a statement that quickly proved false. In another case, he submitted emails allegedly from the partner of a homeowner, in which the man threatened him. But these emails, it turned out, had been fabricated. Another criminal complaint followed.

"To me, he's a highly criminal fraudster," the victim says of the construction company's managing director. On a positive note, she and her partner have since managed—with the help of other tradespeople—to complete the build and move into their home. "But it leaves a bitter aftertaste," she admits.

Cash Vanishes from Safe

In another case, the allegations go beyond fraud to include outright theft. At a property in Peine district, the accused took advance payments but either performed shoddy work or none at all. Demands for rectification went unanswered. The victims took the matter to court and obtained a judgment against the company's managing director, ordering repayment of nearly €23,000.

But the victim describes an even more scandalous incident: The construction boss allegedly installed a safe in her home, known only to her and the accused. Later, assets worth around €50,000 disappeared from it. She has since filed a police report.

Accused Unreachable

The managing director of the construction firm in question—and his wife—have not responded to requests for comment on the allegations. The company's entire online presence has vanished, and calls and emails go unanswered.

Many of those affected say they have largely given up hope of recovering their money or seeing justice served. Still, they want to warn others: Beware when choosing a construction company!
