The image shows a large building with a lot of grass in front of it, surrounded by a metal fence, a pathway, a group of trees, some poles, banners with text on them, a bicycle parked aside, some houses with roofs and windows, and a cloudy sky. This building is the new children's play area at the school.

Braunschweig: New Daycare Center Planned for Weststadt District

Braunschweig plans €10M daycare centre to tackle Weststadt shortages by 2030

City officials have now presented a spatial concept for the new Unstrutstraße daycare center to the relevant committees. This pilot project aims to address the urgent need for childcare spots in the Weststadt neighborhood.

The new facility will accommodate three nursery groups, one inclusive group, and one kindergarten group. The Administrative Committee will vote on the proposal at its June 17 meeting. If approved, construction could begin in 2028, with completion expected by 2030.

District Faces Highest Childcare Shortage in the City

Weststadt has the most pressing demand for childcare services compared to other boroughs. According to the 2025/2026 Daycare Compass, the area lacks 84 nursery spots and 63 kindergarten places, with coverage rates falling far below city targets: just 31.1% for nurseries (target: 45%) and 93.5% for kindergartens (target: 102%).

"Expanding childcare isn't just about numbers—it's a social imperative," says Martin Albinus, head of the city's Department for Children, Youth, and Families. "The new Unstrutstraße daycare center sends a clear signal of support for families and children in Weststadt. This project is a vital step toward strengthening social infrastructure in a neighborhood with significant development needs."

Replacing an Outdated Facility

The new center will be built on Unstrutstraße, adjacent to existing daycare facilities on Ilmenaustraße and Muldeweg, enabling operational synergies. The Caritas Association of Braunschweig will manage the center, replacing the soon-to-close St. Kjeld daycare in the western ring area. In addition to the three existing groups, the new facility will add two more.

The spatial design follows standard guidelines for new daycare construction but includes a dedicated 50-square-meter dining area. This space will not only promote healthy eating but also teach children essential social and life skills.

Pilot for Future Modular Construction

The Unstrutstraße project will serve as a pilot for future daycare builds, using serial modular construction methods. A general contractor will oversee procurement, with technical and legal advisors selected through an open tender process. The total cost is capped at €10 million under a fixed-price contract, with funding already allocated in the 2025/2026 budget.
