Decades on the run end: RAF suspect Daniela Klette arrested at 65
Daniela Klette, a suspected member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), was arrested on February 26, 2024, after decades on the run. The 65-year-old faces multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, bombings, and armed attacks dating back to the early 1990s. She remains in pretrial detention following a warrant issued by the Verden District Court. Klette is accused of involvement in several high-profile RAF attacks during the group's third generation. On February 25, 1990, she allegedly attempted to detonate an explosive device outside Deutsche Bank AG in Eschborn. Less than a year later, on February 13, 1991, she is said to have taken part in a firearm attack on the U.S. Embassy in Bonn-Bad Godesberg.
Further charges relate to the bombing of Weiterstadt Prison on March 27, 1993. Authorities have also linked her to aggravated robbery, kidnapping for extortion, and two counts of attempted murder. The charges include both attempted and completed acts of causing explosions. Despite the RAF's violent campaign in the 1990s, no specific security measures were introduced in Germany at the time to prevent similar attacks. Klette's arrest comes after years of evading capture, marking a significant development in the long-running investigation into the militant group's activities.
Klette now awaits trial while held in custody. The charges against her cover a range of violent crimes spanning several years. Legal proceedings will determine her role in the RAF's operations and the extent of her involvement in the alleged offences.
