Daylight car break-ins surge in Bensheim-Heppenheim over the weekend

A series of car break-ins has struck the Bensheim-Heppenheim region over the weekend. Thieves targeted vehicles in Zell and Heppenheim, stealing valuables in broad daylight. Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information.

The incidents follow a rising trend in vehicle-related crimes across the area over the past year.

The first break-in took place on Saturday, February 7, in Gronauer Straße, Zell. Between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., thieves forced their way into a car and made off with tools, a wallet, and perfume.

Later that same day, a second vehicle was broken into 'Auf der Mauer' in Zell. The crime occurred sometime between 5:00 a.m. and 4:20 p.m., though details of stolen items have not yet been disclosed.

On Friday, February 6, another car was targeted in Heppenheim. A Ford's window was smashed in Graf-von-Galen-Straße between 2:35 and 2:45 p.m., and a backpack was taken from inside.

These latest incidents add to a growing problem in the region. Over the 12 months leading up to March 2026, police recorded around 45 vehicle thefts and break-ins in the Bensheim-Heppenheim area. This marks a 15% increase compared to the previous year, with Heppenheim alone accounting for 18 cases. Bensheim followed with 14, while smaller towns like Lorsch and Zwingenberg also saw incidents.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the break-ins to contact the Criminal Investigation Department in Heppenheim. Witnesses can reach the precinct (21/22) at +49 6252 7060.

The repeated thefts highlight ongoing concerns about vehicle security in the region, particularly in known hotspots like Heppenheim and Bensheim.
