Truck fire due to technical defect on the A7 motorway

Niederaula. On Wednesday (10.09.), around 11:30 AM, a 69-year-old Polish truck driver was driving his loaded Polish articulated lorry southbound on the federal motorway A7. In the uphill section between the Kirchheimer triangle and the Hattenbacher triangle, a technical defect in the engine compartment occurred, causing the vehicle to come to a stop on the second of five lanes. The resulting fire in the engine compartment quickly spread, engulfing the entire articulated lorry and the front part of the trailer. The driver was able to escape the vehicle in time and was fortunately unharmed. Due to the firefighting operations and the widespread leakage of operating materials, the southbound lane had to be completely closed for three hours. During the extensive recovery operations, the fourth and fifth lanes could be reopened.

The road surface was extensively damaged by the fire, resulting in the first two lanes remaining closed for the time being. The total damage is estimated at over 100,000 euros. The incident caused significant delays on surrounding motorways and detour routes. On site were the volunteer fire departments from the municipality of Kirchheim and two police patrol cars from the Bad Hersfeld motorway police station.
