BS Energy slashes district heating prices as coal phaseout boosts renewables
BS Energy is lowering its district heating prices from 1 April. The changes will affect both BS Fernwärme Plus and BS Fernwärme Klassik customers. Households can expect annual savings, with some seeing reductions of up to €357.
The adjustment follows a shift in the company's energy sources. Since April 2024, hard coal has been completely phased out, and renewables now make up nearly 35 percent of its district heating supply.
District heating prices are reviewed twice a year using set formulas. These formulas rely on reference values from the past six to twelve months. For this adjustment, the variable rate for BS Fernwärme Plus will fall by around 4 percent. Customers in multi-family buildings under this plan will save about €357 annually.
The BS Fernwärme Klassik rate will also drop, but by roughly 2 percent. A single-family home on this plan will see gross heating costs decrease by approximately €47 per year. The changes come as BS Energy aligns with stricter environmental regulations. The company stopped using hard coal in its production last month. Renewable energy now accounts for nearly 35 percent of its district heating output. This move supports national and regional climate targets, including Lower Saxony's goal of 100 percent renewable heating by 2040. Federal law also requires 30 percent renewable energy in district heating networks by 2030. No recent data exists on how renewable energy or waste heat shares have changed in similar German cities over the last two years.
The price cuts will reduce heating bills for thousands of households in Braunschweig. The savings vary between €47 and €357, depending on the tariff and property type. With coal now removed from production, the company continues its transition toward greener energy sources.
