Brainwave Pong and eco-plastics win top youth science awards in Kassel
Two innovative projects have taken top honours at the Jugend forscht junior state competition in Kassel. One team adapted the classic game Pong to be controlled by brainwaves, while another developed eco-friendly plastic films. Mayor Dr. Maximilian Bieri praised both achievements and highlighted the role of the Kathinka-Platzhoff Foundation in supporting young talent.
The Neuropong team secured first place in the Working World category with their brainwave-controlled version of Pong. Their project repurposed the 1970s arcade game, allowing players to move the paddle using only their thoughts. Mayor Bieri, a mathematician with a doctorate, tested the application himself by reviewing its code and playing a demonstration round.
The *Green and Durable* team received the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Special Prize from the Federal Ministry for the Environment. Their work focused on optimising bio-based plastic films, aiming to make them strong enough for industrial use. The goal is to bring these sustainable materials to market readiness in the near future. Mayor Bieri congratulated both teams during the event. He also commended the Kathinka-Platzhoff Foundation for creating opportunities that help young people explore science. The foundation runs courses, workshops, and open programmes for curious minds and their families, regardless of prior experience.
